Katie Mae and Jessie met in girl scouts at the age of 13. They took on the alias’s of Jackie (Katie) and Jill (Jessie) and together with the infamous Betty Sue became Tag, Capture the Flag, and Foxes and Hounds champions. They went on to an art high school and participated in different activities but remained in touch. Betty Sue, unfortunately, they lost touch with. During their senior year of high school they both swam on the swim team and ate lunch at the same time. Katie Mae also took AP Biology that year, a class for which Jessie was planning a field excursion. These activities brought them close once again, and after their senior year they grew closer yet, exploring the post highschool world together.
Katie Mae went on to a small northern college where she learned lots of math, physics and other things. She also learned how to stay warm. Jessie went off to the great world for a short time, survived a semester in Spain and six months in Peru, although she claims no responsibility for this feat. She returned to attend a large southern university, where she learned about history, public transit and many other things. They both made wonderful friends in college, graduated with distinction, and both hosted and attended many fabulous dance parties. Katie Mae also ran on the cross country team, she is very fast.
They also both studied abroad in Latin America during their college careers. Katie Mae immersed herself in Valparaiso, Chile, where she learned about thermodynamics, bridges and life without central heating. Meanwhile (although, not actually at the same time) Jessie studied corruption and oral literature in Quito, Ecuador gaining first hand experience in both.
After graduating from her university Katie Mae returned home and worked in a fabulous restaurant for almost a year. She learned to distinguish among the best of chocolates and wines. In January 2009 she returned to Chile and began collecting teaching jobs to support herself.
Jessie graduated from her university a year after Katie Mae had and, within days, set off for the Camino de Santiago in Spain. After completing some 500k of this trek she traipsed around Europe for four months meeting many wonderful and amazing people. She then returned to the USA and her childhood home, where she lived with her parents, one of her two brothers, the senile family dog, and a cat, Maggie, who frequently hallucinated but did know to come when called. She practiced photography and worked interviewing Spanish speakers at the university.
In November of 2009, facilitated by the wonders of the internet, a plan was hatched across continents and time zones that resulted in this blog. And, if all goes well, much, much more.
